Days 10-11: One hot weekend!

It’s been uncharacteristically hot for Seattle!  We broke all records with 95 degree heat both days this weekend.  For us, that’s HOT!

On SAT. 8/14, we went to the vet to check on James’ stitches.  The vet took some out and left others in…not quite ready to be removed.  Boy, did we LOVE the vet office.  It was air-conditioned and cool!

James has lost his appetite for his canned food.  I’ve been feeding him Taste of the Wild-wetlands, which is basically DUCK.  He is turning his head away now.  This is DAY 5 post-chemo treatment.  I was hoping that his appetite would return.  This weekend, I tried feeding him cottage cheese mixed with rice and just a little duck.  He ate some of it.  I also gave him sliced chicken from the deli and he loved that.  I will go get more deli chicken tonight.

I really hope he gets his appetite back.  He is such a tiny boy!

On a good note, James is hopping all over the house like a pro!  He is off of the pain meds and is much more alert!  He seems so much more like the “old James”.

Glad to hear James is already back to acting like”old James”. I’m sure he will get his appetite back in no time. Fortis is a food hound big time! The amputation never caused him to lose his appetite but from what I understand the chemo treatments can cause this. Keep on hoppin Mr. James.

A comment you sent me on the 8th somehow got tossed into the spam pile. I’m sorry. Not sure why that happened.

Catie’s appetite was off and on for several days after each chemo treatment. She also suffered from some extra lethargy/extra tiredness about 7 days in.

James sounds like he has enormous spirit and energy. And despite those scorcher days. Well done!

My crew just love to have sardines mixed into their food. They tended to perk up Aquila’s appetite when she was a bit off. Unfortunately they are now off of her menu, but I can’t think of a reason James couldn’t try them.

It looks like you are doing really good James. Those first couple of weeks are hard. See if you can get your pawrents to cook you up some hamburger and rice. I really like it after chemo, and I even pretended I didn’t like my regular food –just so they would give me the good stuff. With all of your energy, you will do great things. We will be thinking of you.

Yes, we know all about these side effects from the chemo. Mackenzie was on carboplatin and up until the 4th – 5th day or so, following her chemo, that was when she would start to get her appetite back. It was a real struggle during those first few days. She refused to eat all the things that she loved. The vet ended up prescribing anti-nausea medication (an injection before her chemo treatment and then pills during the 1st 4 – 5 days following her chemo which seemed to help. ) Anti-nausea meds during these chemo treatments seem to be a standard now so maybe something you want to talk to your vet about if James isn’t taking these.
So awesome that James continues to hop and be more like the old James – aren’t our tripawds amazing???

Hi James!! We’re in Seattle too, and you’re right, it has been hot. Maybe that’s the reason for the lack of appetite. We all go through that when it’s smoking outside.

What a great story and a great life. I say much of that about Lincoln, too. “My strength is as the strength of ten, because my heart is pure”…reminds me of James.

Stay cool James, and eat some dinner!!

Deli Chicken….ah, lucky boy! Don’t worry, as long as the vet says his bloodwork is OK he should be fine. Chemo can take away appetites but they get ’em back. Like Laura said, the stinker the food the better. Try liverwurst or braunschwager (yuck!) those might help. Also check out this Nutrition Post we did about getting appetites back.

Oh man 95 in Seattle sounds brutal. Hope it cools down soon. Yikes!
